About Us

The Society of Asexuals and Aromantics of Alberta (SAAA) is dedicated to creating connections, increasing a-spec representation, providing educational resources, and advocating for awareness of issues that impact Albertan a-specs, both within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and the public at large.

We were originally founded in 2014 as the “Calgary Aces and Aros” but soon expanded to other cities across the province, officially changing our name & becoming a registered society in 2020. Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and regions, and find community through similar experiences as asexual and aromantic people.

FAQ

What is asexual/aromantic?

Check out our Being A-spec page for definitions and other relevant terms!

Is anyone allowed to become a member or attend events?

Yes! Everyone is welcome to get involved with our community. You are not required to identify as a-spec.
The majority of events listed on our calendar are labelled “open events” - this means they are open to allies and anyone from the general public seeking to learn (note that all of our events are safe spaces, and aphobic or disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated). Periodically in our calendar, you will see “closed events” - these events are intended only for a-specs and their invited guests (the intention is to create even safer spaces for anyone who may be closeted or not feel as comfortable in public settings).

Do I have to pay to become a member or attend events?

Nope! Membership is free, and so are most of our events. However, we would be very grateful if you’re interested in making a donation! All of our operating costs (website, software, print materials, Pride applications, etc.) are funded entirely through donations.

How can I stay in touch with you?

We regularly post on social media, and also have a monthly newsletter. You can find our social media links & newsletter signup at the bottom of every page on our website!
We also have a Discord server and a private Facebook group which you can join from our contact page. Please note, the Discord and Facebook are a-specs-only and not for allies.
